You could get financial help to improve your home’s energy efficiency so that keeping warm costs you less. Select where you live from the drop-down menus to see what support is available.

  • If you or someone you live with is receiving benefits, talk to your energy supplier to see what help is available through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). Under the ECO scheme, energy suppliers must install energy efficiency measures in the homes of the people who need them most. The scheme is available in England, Scotland and Wales.
  • You might be eligible to apply for funding towards insulation for your home from the Great British Insulation Scheme. This could save you around £400 a year on energy bills.
  • Call your local authority for information on local initiatives in your area.
  • The UK Government’s website has information and guidance on financial support and saving energy at home. If you need help with this online service, call 0800 098 7950.

  • If you live in Scotland you may be eligible for a grant and interest free loan for a range of home improvements via Home Energy Scotland (HES). You can also call the service on 0808 808 2282 for free, impartial, expert advice.

  • The Welsh Government Warm Homes Nest scheme aims to make Welsh homes warmer and more energy efficient. Nest is open to all householders in Wales and provides advice on saving energy, money management, energy tariffs and benefit entitlement.   • Households across Northern Ireland might be entitled to funding towards energy efficiency home improvements from the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme and the Affordable Warmth Scheme. You can call the NI Energy Advice Line on 0800 111 4455 to find out more.
  • Check you’re on the correct energy tariff or the cheapest method of payment by visiting the Consumer Council NI website.
  • If your home uses oil, ask your local council if there is an oil stamp scheme in your area. You can buy a minimum £5 stamp and collect them in a savings card, using the value to pay towards an oil order.
  • Oil users may also be able to save money by joining the NI Oil Buying Network.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born before 25 September 1957, you should be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Your age and other factors affect how much you’ll get, but it should be between £250 and £600. These amounts also include the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, which is between £150 and £300. This payment is to give you extra help with your energy bills during the winter.

Cold Weather Payment for England, Wales and Northern Ireland

To help with the coldest periods for households in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there’s also the Cold Weather Payment.

This is a £25 payment to help with bills for each seven-day period of sub-zero conditions. You qualify for this payment if you’re receiving certain benefits and live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The scheme reopens for applications on 1 November 2023 for winter 2023/2024.

Winter Heating Payment for Scotland

If you live in Scotland and are on a low income, you’ll get a £50 Winter Heating Payment each year to help towards heating costs, whatever the weather.

Warm Home Discount for England, Scotland and Wales

If you live in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland) you might be eligible for the the Warm Home Discount. This is another winter-only payment of £140 towards energy bills for those who claim the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or are on a low income.

The scheme is open between October 2023 and March 2024. You need to apply via your electricity supplier but they need to be part of the scheme. Here’s a list of suppliers who take part.
